Physical Education

The school encourages a huge variety of activities in the Physical Education Curriculum for all our students.

We do not have a huge space for indoor activities such as a Hall however we have allocated a small hall at the rear of the school for PE .We have invested in some equipment which is kept in storage presses at the rear of this hall.

We are in the lucky position of having a PE teacher who comes one day a week and does PE with all students class by class.

The teachers also use this hall for weekly PE sessions.

The school also currently has a wonderful secure playground and playing pitch for ball games such as soccer.

The playground has equipment such as a climbing frame, slide, swings and a zip –line. This equipment is on specialised soft-tiled materials and is regularly maintained by St Michael’s House.

The school also has invested in 4 go-karts which are stored in the shed at the rear of the playground. These are very popular with the student population and enable all students to learn to cycle a trike and control it correctly.

Swimming

The staff support the students to go swimming weekly to a large complex in Drogheda with a 25metre pool.

The younger students and those with more complex needs use the St Michael’s House Swimming pool in Belcamp once a week.

The students also use Belcamp to go cycling on bicycles.

The School Soccer Team

The school also have a Football Team and we enter a league with other special schools in Dublin every year. We have a football kit sponsored by the local sports club Rush Athletic.

Last year we finished joint first in the league and attended a huge party for all involved in Island Bridge.

We were delighted when local sportsman Stephen McPhail who played for the Republic of Ireland Soccer Team as well as Leeds UTD,Barnsley UTD and Cardiff City UTD came to present our medals.

Stephen spoke to the pupils about his career and how important it is to look after yourself and eat healthily and get a good night’s sleep.

Enjoy Tennis

This year the school is engaged with a team of coaches from “Enjoy Tennis” in Balrothery Tennis Club where some of our students are going every Friday morning for Tennis Coaching. This has proved really popular with the students.

Coaching Sessions

The school encourage people with specific skill-sets to visit the students and pass on their knowledge.

We have regular links with Fingal Co Council Sports Division who send coaches to the school for weekly training sessions in Ball –Skills.

We also have links with the FAI Sports Division who provide us with Soccer Coaching at regular intervals during the school year.

Sports Day

The schools PE teacher organises a School Sports Day every year in the summer term. The staff are instrumental in helping out and providing support so that everyone can participate and enjoy the event.

Special Olympics

The school has always enjoyed a close bond with the Special Olympics and we encourage our students to partake in the local Special Olympic Clubs.

Special Olympic Swimming takes place in the ALLSA at Dublin Airport

Special Olympic Athletics takes place in Skerries

Mr Paul Newe is the coach in Skerries and welcomes newcomers.

The school regularly takes the students out walking if at all possible and actively encourages our students to be physically active.
